In November 2004, Downey struck out in a new direction with the release of The Futurist, his debut album, on the Sony Classical label.
Working in a style he calls "highbrow pop with jazz and classical influences", Downey has written eight powerful, deeply felt new songs for the album, which also includes two striking covers (of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" and the Yes classic "Your Move").
After years of encouragement from friends and colleagues, the actor decided to go into the studio and build his first album largely on original tunes that have been around for several years as well new songs he recently wrote.
Downey has also written songs for films in which he appeared, and his smoky, expressive singing was also featured in his award-winning performance on the TV series Ally McBeal.
